Driving a different car

You’ve likely now got used to driving my car. Other cars will feel different to drive. Here’s some things to help you:

  • Spend some time familiarising yourself with the controls of your car. Ensure you know where everything is, including lights, wipers and demisters.

  • Try driving in a quiet or familiar area first. Practice pulling in at the side of the road so that you can develop a new reference point to help you judge where the kerb is.

  • The biting point may be in a different place, and your car might require more gas to help pull away. Stalling the engine happens if the clutch is raised too quickly or not enough gas is used, so if you do stall don’t panic!

  • When parking, some of your reference points may have changed. A lot will be transferable, but spend some time developing new ones.

Planning your journeys

Heading out for your first drive? Here’s some things to check beforehand:

Fuel - have you got enough fuel for your journey? You don’t want to run out part way. Plan to fill up at a cheap petrol station - supermarkets are often the cheapest; motorway service stations are by far the most expensive! The Petrol Prices app is a great tool to find the nearest or cheapest.

Lights - are they clean and working correctly? You can be given a fine for a broken light. Check indicators, brake lights, headlights and tail lights, reverse lights and fog lights on a regular basis.

Oil - check oil levels regularly: too little or too much oil will damage your engine.

Water - check your coolant levels to ensure your engine doesn’t run hot. Just like the oil levels, make sure to check this while the engine is cold.

Electrics - check for any electrical issues or warning lights on your dashboard. Use your vehicle manual to help understand what the different warning lights mean.

Rubber- check your tyres to ensure they’re safe and legal. Your vehicle manual will contain the recommended tyre pressures for your car. Look out for cuts or bulges on the tyre sidewall. And make sure there is no less than 1.6mm of tread in the centre part of each tyre, and the whole way round the circumference.

Just remember your FLOWERs…
